5 Facial Mistakes That Are Making You Look Older

There’s nothing that can make you look older than sun damage and wrinkles. But in addition to not getting enough sleep or being in a relationship with someone who doesn’t treat you right, there are five other common mistakes that you can make when it comes to your skincare routine that will also end up aging you.
We’re here to help! Read on for all the details about the most common facial mistakes that make you look older, plus our tips for avoiding them so you can keep looking young forever!

Over-exfoliating

This one should be pretty obvious. Exfoliating too much can cause your skin to become red and irritated, which then leads to premature aging. But did you know that over-exfoliation has also been linked to acne?

When your skin is stripped too much, it becomes less effective at protecting itself from bacteria and other irritants, giving those pathogens the opportunity they need to cause breakouts. So what’s a girl (or guy) to do? Limit exfoliation to two or three times per week—and only use gentle products that won’t result in damage if your on the side of caution.

Overexposing skin to the sun

Sunlight is a brilliant source of vitamin D and can be beneficial to your health, but it also contains ultraviolet rays that can damage skin. When you’re out in the sun, the UVB rays cause burning and redness. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and cause wrinkles and age spots.

Avoiding direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm is an easy way to protect your face from harmful UV exposure, but even if you’re inside or under an umbrella or hat, make sure to wear sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection (meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays).

Not using retinoids

Retinoids are a type of vitamin A that can help with acne, wrinkles and sun damage. You can buy retinoids as creams or pills. It’s also one of the most effective ways to clear up acne.

When you’re using a retinoid, you may experience redness or peeling on your skin. This is normal—it’s actually an indication that the treatment is working. You won’t see results overnight, but if you’re looking for a way to improve your skin, this is one of the best treatments out there.

Not using sunscreen daily

The importance of daily sunscreen application is often overlooked, but it’s crucial to your skin health. The sun ages your face by causing wrinkles and discoloration, both of which are difficult to reverse when left untreated. Even if it’s cloudy outside, you’re still at risk for sun damage because UV rays can penetrate through the clouds.

Even in winter months when the sun isn’t visible or as strong, you should still use a daily SPF moisturizer (you might be surprised at how much time we spend outdoors). This is because even though no UV rays are coming through the clouds at this time of year, they’re still present.

Skipping moisturizer

Moisturizer is a game-changer. It can smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, brighten dull skin, and make you look healthier overall. Plus, it’s much less expensive than surgery or botox!

How to choose the right moisturizer:

Look for labels that say “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic” (the latter means non-pore clogging). Avoid anything with mineral oil, as well as lanolin or petroleum jelly—these are too heavy for most people’s faces. · Use facial oils instead of lotion if you have oily skin; lotions tend to be better for dry skin types.

In a nutshell

The most important thing to remember is that the best skincare is something you feel comfortable using. If it makes your skin happy, then you are on the right track!
